Elsie Slonim, who was born in November in 1917 in the United States of America and grew up in Baden/Austria, has been living predominantly in Cyprus since 1939.
She is a very remarkable eye witness of history: her memories of the life she spent in Austria, Romania, the USA, Palestine/Israel, France and Cyprus are captured in her books “Ahead of Time”, with he German version “Vom Brot im Meer“.
A remarkable and eventful life, which includes almost a century, yet she is fun-loving although characterized by displacement, exile and personal setbacks. Elsie Slonim still holds overwhelming motivation to start anew and be optimistic about the future and laughs about herself.
Today Elsie Slonim resides in the same home she has since the 1960’s, which after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, has become a Turkish Military zone of which she is the only foreign resident.
Elsie holds a Teachers Certificate for Ikebana from The Sogetsu School of Ikebana of Japan, and teacher’s certificate for teaching German from authorities in Vienna, Austria. In addition, she has completed the first year of interior design from Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna in 1936 before having to leave the country due to the Nazi influence.
Elsie Slonim tries to help those in awkward situations, and is an animal lover who has her own dog called ‘Schatzi’.
Her motto to life is:
Cast thy bread upon the waters, for you shall find it after many days…
Which means: Always be ready to do a good turn and don’t expect a reward for it. For, some day, you will surely find your reward waiting for you.
